　　Sports are more than competitions. To me, they mean growth under the care of others. I learned this the hard way.

　　I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me.

　　“Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!”

　　Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.

　　Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women’s 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.

　　“You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” they all said this to me, including my teacher.

　　My deskxmate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together.” Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation.

　　Fortunately, my deskxmate gave me a hand. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. When the fear of being laughed at struck me, I saw others running right beside me. They gave me strengths. While we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us.

　　One month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me.

　　With the shot of the starting gun, I dashed out and ran as fast as I could, as if it were a 200xmeter race. Soon I was out of breath and slowed down. Other runners passed me one by one, and gradually I had no idea how many of them were still behind me. My legs were getting heavier and heavier, and I might fall down at any moment. 　　ladies and gentlemen, i can say i'm no less nervous than my fellow and he was on the first time coming before this house. i can say ladies and gentlemen, that the problem we are facing before us, the problem that i have to deal with today, is how to define success.

　　it is often too easy, it is often too simplistic to define success as something external, something objective, something dealing with money, fame or reputation. but what i believe success is that it is not external. it comes from within. it is internal. i believe success is that you have to have your own ideals, and that you have faith in those ideals, even in the face of extreme adversity. and that is my definition of success.

　　i also believe that success is not discriminatory. success does not attach to a mere particular class of individuals. i believe that each and every individual, regardless of race, gender, class or even economic background, has an equal right to success, because each person has the right to develop his own ideals and to pursue those ideals.

　　a good example of this is the composer beethoven, a man who all of us know has created great symphonies. this man was deaf. this man was unable to hear his own majestic pieces of work. and yet, he held to his ideal of creation of music to the very end. then what exactly does the definition of success mean to me? to answer this question, to exemplify it, i pose a question to this house. i pose a question what brings us here together today, ladies and gentlemen, students and educators as you like. and the answer that i have found is the love for the spoken word.

　　love for the spoken word means how it is to express, how it is to listen, how it is to understand. because what happens when you have a pause, what happens when you have a rhetoric speech all differs on the impact and communication that you have on your audience. but the meaning of the spoken word applies ever more strongly to those who are unable to speak, or are unwilling to speak. because all the beautiful thoughts and emotions encapsulated in that person will inevitably be lost, if that person is not able to speak.

　　i once went to australia in 1998,and i saw two pictures drawn by threexyearxold children. one was drawn by a normal child, one was drawn by what is known as an autistic child, a child which is exclusive, which is unable to express himself verbally to other people. and you could see the difference between the pictures. one was a picture of a horse very simple and straightforward. one was a picture of a horse a gain, but you could see the life, you could see the spirit, and you could see the detail behind that picture.

　　so the point i want to make here is that these people do have emotion they understand a lot, but it is very very fatal that they are not able to express themselves. and my definition of success is to share with them the beauty of the spoken word. my definition of success is to teach and be able to change these people's lives, because i have had the opportunity of encountering these people in my times either at school or during my summer jobs. i have had the time and opportunity to change these people. i have had the time to see exactly what exactly they go d1rough and to understand that point.

　　my ideal here is to share the beauty of the spoken word to these people. it is fright fatal that these people are not given the opportunity to be understood by the world. i say it because these people are often neglected by the public. i say it because people often think they are awkward and different. but i say we cannot forgive these acts because we must have a proactive approach to teach these people.

　　i say, ladies and gentlemen, that is important to keep your ideals. i say we should not have a premature abortion of ideals. it is easy to stray; it is easy to be distracted. what i say is let your ideals live on. let the child of your ideals live on, because what i want to leave you with is living you life without an ideal means that your life is not worth living at all. thank you.

　　Our teacher seems not to be an expert on languages. She does not tell us that the word “goodbye” originally means: ’god be with you’ or “god bless you” when we are talking about the basic expressions of saying goodbye. She does not tell us such things. She only teaches us every day English to help us to communicate with others. And that is just what I needed. So, this program has been very helpful to me.　I hope there will be more such programs in the future so that many more people can benefit from it.

　　英語短文閱讀的重要性不僅表現(xiàn)在高中英語考試中它的份量最大，而且還表現(xiàn)在英語短文是英語詞匯知識和語法知識的載體方面。詞匯量的擴大、詞匯知識的豐富和句子表達(dá)的多樣性光靠死記硬背是無法也不可能實現(xiàn)的。擴大詞匯量、豐富自己的詞匯知識和地道完美的表達(dá)自己只有依靠優(yōu)良的閱讀習(xí)慣。教材課文是精讀材料，需要同學(xué)們讀熟讀透，直至能開口娓娓道來為止。課外閱讀又叫泛讀。高中英語新課標(biāo)教材對高中前八個模塊的學(xué)習(xí)有一個要求：課外閱讀要完成30萬單詞的閱讀量。也就是說：同學(xué)們需要每天有500到700個單詞量的閱讀。課外閱讀也是運用語言的一種必不可少的形式。課外閱讀不能停留在完成幾道閱讀理解試題或者完形填空試題。關(guān)鍵在盡量弄懂文章中的每一句話含義、長難句的結(jié)構(gòu)。留意你還不很熟悉的詞匯、詞匯知識和語法知識。還要去認(rèn)真體會不同的英語句子在表達(dá)上的精確性。千萬不要在一些你還不認(rèn)識的，拼寫怪誕，發(fā)音困難的生僻詞匯上浪費時間和精力。

　　閱讀能力，除詞匯量大小以外，還包含閱讀速度、長難句理解、和把握主題大意的能力。要會快速閱讀，同學(xué)們必須學(xué)會一些閱讀的技能：如：skimming(跳讀)、scanning(掃讀)和digesting(研讀)。Skimming和scanning就是根據(jù)閱讀任務(wù)在文中查找相關(guān)信息。Digesting主要是用來理解長難句、把握主題大意和作者意圖以及猜測詞義的技術(shù)。不僅要研讀長難句結(jié)構(gòu)，也還需要研讀邏輯關(guān)系。

　　流暢的短文表達(dá)能力在很大程度上依賴于你的詞匯量、詞匯知識和句法知識。它們的積累在于平時的聽、說和讀的活動。寫作表達(dá)能力中，你的英語句式的結(jié)構(gòu)思維能力或者英語習(xí)慣思維能力會對表達(dá)能力有重要影響。這就需要同學(xué)們平時養(yǎng)成一個良好習(xí)慣：那就是總是試圖用英語來表達(dá)出你眼睛所看到的，耳朵能聽到的，身體能感受到的和你思想能想到的。除此之外，一篇優(yōu)秀的短文還少不了三個要素：即結(jié)構(gòu)，內(nèi)容和語言。

　　一片結(jié)構(gòu)完美的英文短文，尤其是說明文和議論文，往往有一個比較完優(yōu)美的，誘人深入閱讀的開頭語。主題句是可從開頭語中自然而然過度而來。你所程述的觀點，一般都要用事實做論證，或者用具體方式方法來支持。巧妙的結(jié)論句往往能使文章錦上添花。

　　內(nèi)容需要真實，合乎情理，能讓人信服。文中不要有與主題無關(guān)的內(nèi)容。

　　語言要盡可能是地道的，去漢語化的英語。要經(jīng)常套用自己在閱讀中、在課堂上學(xué)來句子結(jié)構(gòu)去表達(dá)自己。要敢于嘗試用比較復(fù)雜的句子結(jié)構(gòu)和比較高級的詞匯來使文章進(jìn)一步美化。

　　聽所讀寫四大技能并不是各自孤立的，也是相互作用和相互制約的。如果平時，只注重某一項技能的學(xué)習(xí)和訓(xùn)練，那是不可能成為一位真正的英語強手的。

　　任何一門學(xué)科都需要踏實的學(xué)習(xí)作風(fēng)。外語也不例外。學(xué)外語的實主要表現(xiàn)在以下幾個方面：

　　一、落實詞匯、詞匯知識和特殊句式的積累。落實詞匯和詞匯知識并不是反復(fù)背記詞匯表中的單詞。落實詞匯、詞匯知識以及特殊句式的最好辦法是先探究后運用。一個詞匯在經(jīng)過七到八次在不同時間和不同的語境中運用后，它就是你的了。詞匯知識和特殊句式也是一樣。寫作是運用，造句是運用，閱讀，傾聽和與他人用英語交流也是運用。借助詞典進(jìn)行造句練習(xí)，在造句中運用新學(xué)的詞匯不失為一種行之有效的簡單易行的方式。

　　二、落實課外閱讀。每天堅持花半小時閱讀一兩篇短文。一要真正讀懂。二要留意詞匯運用。

　　三、落實早自習(xí)精讀。每次有硬指標(biāo)，死任務(wù)。

　　四、落實課內(nèi)課外書面作業(yè)。簡單的完成老師布置的作業(yè)量并不是落實。書面作業(yè)質(zhì)的落實必須是在真正懂了、記住了的基礎(chǔ)上又快又好的獨立的、閉卷式的完成書面作業(yè)。對發(fā)現(xiàn)的漏洞和缺陷要采取補救措施。

　　五、落實自主探究的學(xué)習(xí)能力培養(yǎng)。學(xué)習(xí)中缺乏自主探究，不善于利用團(tuán)隊合作和與老師溝通是很多高中生在學(xué)習(xí)中存在的一種普遍想象。老師不是保姆，老師不可能把英語的詞匯知識和英語的四大能力烹制成一道道佳肴后，一口一口地喂進(jìn)學(xué)生的口中。老師的探究代替不了學(xué)生的探究。學(xué)習(xí)能力的培養(yǎng)主要是探究能力的培養(yǎng)。學(xué)會了探究，你才會在知識的大海中暢游。學(xué)會了探究，你才會成為終身學(xué)習(xí)者。英語學(xué)科的探究應(yīng)該表現(xiàn)在對某一特定詞匯在文中、在句中的用法和含義的探究，對長難句結(jié)構(gòu)和含義的探究，對相關(guān)知識關(guān)聯(lián)的探究，對作者意圖、主題大意的探究，當(dāng)然也包含對學(xué)法的探究。要探究知識，要有工具（詞典以及各種手冊等）的幫助，更要有團(tuán)隊的合作，還要有老師的幫助。團(tuán)隊合作可以讓你取他人之長補自己之短，還可以集思廣益，產(chǎn)生思想火花。常與老師溝通是可以使你更容易發(fā)現(xiàn)前進(jìn)的方向，少走彎路。

　　總而言之，英語學(xué)習(xí)需要同學(xué)們從聽說讀寫四大技能方面養(yǎng)成良好的學(xué)習(xí)習(xí)慣，堅持語言知識積累、精讀、泛讀、課內(nèi)課外作業(yè)和自主探究五個方面的腳踏實地地勤奮努力，就能夠比較輕松地完成高中英語的學(xué)習(xí)，為自己將來的遠(yuǎn)大理想奠定堅實的外語基礎(chǔ)。
