耶魯演講2014

　　Yale University President Peter Salovey,

　　尊敬的耶魯大學(xué)的朋友們，你們好

　　Friends from Yale University, Good Morning!

　　歡迎你們來到北京，讓我們?cè)俅蜗鄷?huì)

　　Welcome to China! We are delighted to meet again.

　　160年前，中國第一位留學(xué)生容閎

　　160 years ago, the first Chinese student to study abroad, Rong Hong

　　就是在耶魯大學(xué)就讀并畢業(yè)的

　　graduated from Yale University.

　　在他的幫助下

　　Later, with his help,

　　清政府在“洋務(wù)運(yùn)動(dòng)”期間先后派出了100多名學(xué)生

　　the Qing Dynasty government, under the “Westernization Movement” sent over 100 children

　　去美國學(xué)習(xí)，學(xué)習(xí)美國的先進(jìn)技術(shù)、知識(shí)和文化

　　to study in the United States, to learn about modern American technology and culture.

　　從此，中國關(guān)閉的大門打開了

　　From thereon, China's doors were cast open,

　　先進(jìn)的知識(shí)和技術(shù)涌進(jìn)了中國

　　and modern knowledge, technology and culture swept in,

　　這為中國社會(huì)帶來了最根本性的變化

　　bringing fundamental changes to Chinese society.

　　40年前，中國開放了

　　40 years ago, China opened its doors to economic reform.

　　鄧小平先生在中美還未建交之前

　　Prior to reinitiating diplomatic relations with the United States,

　　就派了52名學(xué)生去美國留學(xué)

　　Mr. Deng Xiaoping sent 52 students to study abroad in America.

　　回顧這一百多年中國的歷史

　　Looking back on the last hundred years of history,

　　中國社會(huì)的每一步進(jìn)步

　　every step in the progress and development of Chinese society

　　都離不開對(duì)外的開放，對(duì)外的學(xué)習(xí)

　　is the result of opening doors, and education.

　　回頭看，敞開胸懷的年代就是我們進(jìn)步的年代.

　　For any country, periods of embracing openness, lend to progress and development.

　　閉關(guān)鎖國的年代就是我們落后的年代

　　Periods of isolation led to underdevelopment.

　　My wife Zhang Xin

　　就是中國改革開放后比較早出國留學(xué)的一批

　　was among the earliest group of students to study abroad during China’s period of economic reform.

　　她在英國受到了教育

　　She received an outstanding education in the UK

　　學(xué)習(xí)到了知識(shí)、技術(shù)和文化

　　where she learned about modern knowledge, technology and culture.

　　在那個(gè)年代，我們的家庭和國家比較貧窮

　　At that time, our country, and our families, were poor

　　無力支付留學(xué)生在海外的學(xué)費(fèi)和基本的生活費(fèi)

　　and unable to shoulder the expenses of tuition and living expenses abroad.

　　正是那些海外默默無聞的人們

　　With the help of so many nameless donors abroad

　　他們慷慨的捐助，才讓她和更多的中國留學(xué)生

　　Zhang Xin, and so many others, obtained the financial aid that

　　完成了自己的學(xué)業(yè)

　　would allow them to complete their studies.

　　今天，中國的社會(huì)進(jìn)步了

　　Today, Chinese society has progressed

　　正像你們來到北京所看到的一樣

　　As you can see as you visit Beijing

　　在各方面都取得了進(jìn)步

　　every aspect of China has progressed.

　　尤其在物質(zhì)財(cái)富方面，遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)的超過了改革開放之初

　　In particular, from the prospective of material wealth, there is no way to compare today’s China with the China of only decades ago, in the early days of economic reform.

　　我們有能力支付自己國家學(xué)生出國留學(xué)的學(xué)費(fèi)

　　We now have the ability to support financial aid for students from our own country.

　　我們的這次捐助，實(shí)際上

　　This is the responsibility

　　就是要去承擔(dān)這份責(zé)任

　　we have chosen to take on.

　　在與耶魯大學(xué)的朋友們交流的過程中

　　As we have developed out relationship with all of you at Yale University

　　我們聽到了你們?cè)S多的感謝

　　we have received so many kind words of gratitude.

　　實(shí)際上真正應(yīng)該感謝的是我們

　　The people that truly deserve our thanks are you.

　　是耶魯大學(xué)一直默默無聞的在支持著中國的留學(xué)生

　　You are the ones who have selflessly aided and supported Chinese students.

　　在幫助著中國的留學(xué)生

　　You have educated Chinese students.

　　是改革開放和教育讓我們有了今天的富足

　　It is China’s economic reform that has provided us with today’s prosperity.

　　對(duì)我們今天所擁有的財(cái)富

　　On the topic of wealth,

　　我和我的夫人張欣，有兩點(diǎn)共同的理解

　　my wife and I share two similar view points:

　　第一， 這是一份托付

　　Firstly, wealth is a responsibility.

　　是社會(huì)給我們的一份責(zé)任

　　We are responsible for

　　這份責(zé)任就是要讓我們把這些錢要花到該花的地方

　　spending money where it is needed most

　　不要亂花錢

　　and not to spend it wastefully.

　　教育是最該花錢的地方

　　Education is the area that most deserves financial support.

　　我們每個(gè)人都是一座擁有寶藏的礦山

　　Every person’s potential is like a hidden gem,

　　唯有通過教育才能挖掘出這些寶藏

　　and education is the tool that unlocks human potential.

　　第二， 這些財(cái)富對(duì)我們和我們家庭的每個(gè)成員是一種考驗(yàn)

　　Secondly, wealth is a test for us and for our family.

　　它要讓我們變得更加的謙卑

　　It forces us to become more humble,

　　更加的慷慨

　　more generous,

　　更加的節(jié)儉

　　more economic,

　　更有愛心、更有責(zé)任心

　　more caring, and more responsible,

　　而不是相反

　　not the other way around.

　　我們的捐助比起教育所需是微乎其微的

　　Our contribution serves just a small portion of the vast need for support in education.

　　但是我們想通過我們的行為

　　But we hope that this gesture will become

　　能夠架起中美文化交流的橋梁

　　one part of the bridge connecting China and the United States.

　　同時(shí)我們希望耶魯大學(xué)

　　We hope that our donation will enable Yale University

　　能夠招更多的中國的學(xué)生

　　to admit more Chinese students

　　更夠讓中國貧困家庭的學(xué)生受益

　　and more Chinese students from modest economic backgrounds.

　　我們也希望這些同學(xué)們，通過耶魯大學(xué)良好的教育

　　We hope that these students, by receiving an outstanding education from Yale University

　　能夠關(guān)心社會(huì)，關(guān)心人類

　　will continue to care for and contribute

　　能夠做促進(jìn)社會(huì)和人類進(jìn)步的事情

　　to the betterment of the world and humanity.
