My dream ended when I was born. Although I never knew it then, I just held on to something that would never come to pass. Dreams really do exist. But in the morning when you wake up, they are remembered just as a dream. That is what happened to me.

I always had the dream to dance like a beautiful ballerina twirling around and around and hearing people applaud for me. When I was young,I would twirl around and around in the fields of wildflowers that grew in my backyard.

I thought that if I twirled faster everything would disappear and I would wake up in a new place. Reality woke me up when I heard a voice saying, "I don't know why you bother trying to dance. Ballerinas are pretty , slender little girls. Besides, you don't have the talent to even be a ballerina." I remember how those words paralyzed every feeling in my body. I fell to the ground and wept for hours.

We lived in the country by a nearby lake. I did not like to be at home. When my parents were home, my mother just yelled and criticized because nothing was ever perfect in her life. She dreamed of a different life but she ended up living in the country far away from the city where she believed her dreams would have come true.

I enjoyed hanging out by the water. I would sit there for hours and stare at my reflection. There I was, looking nothing like a pretty ballerina dancer. Reflections don't lie. Once the waves would come, my reflection was gone. Washed away just like my dream to dance.

As I grew older, I began to realize that the reason my dream was even born, was because it was something that was. inside of me. The dream I had was never nurtured and cared for, so it slowly died. It's not that I wanted it to die, but I allowed it to die the day I started listening to the words, "You can't do it." When I finally woke up from many years of dreaming, I realized that you can't settle for dancing in the wildflowers, you have to move on to the platform。

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living.

Inthe center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

Everyone has their own mood, their own phase method, when they are bored, they always want to write, and enjoy the pleasure of releasing their emotions...

Remember four or five grade, begin to look at the picture books, read stories, wait until the sixth grade graduation of time, began to watch martial arts novels, vaguely remember the original novel named "ghost kids", the author has already don't remember who, only vaguely remember the content of the book includes related physiological health knowledge, foreplay part description is wonderful, process to particles are "well" "ah," "oh" "oh," "ouch" and ellipsis... Instead, the end is mostly the woman's paralysis, the inability of the limbs to end. In this regard, I completed the youth education which was not completed in school.

Since then, I have not been able to clean up. After three years in junior high school, I finished all the courses in a wuxia bookstall next to the department store and won the honorary title of "jinshi". And with the junior middle school language teacher has established the good relationship between teachers and students, something he will go to the search for a work for me, take my martial arts novels, in the name of the confiscated and after see to warn the way back to me. So that I can refresh in time so that he can see the updated content.

In high school, going to do in a young, literate, have grade, under the condition of competitive rogue, start reading youth digest, youth expo as well as the health of the readers, such as books, reading classic literature, and, of course, has extensive and readability of the article is also indispensable, what "jin ping mei", "lady chatterley's lover", "paradise lost" and so on. From this, we obtained the perfect score of education.

It's too big. I can't remember what I'm looking at. Twelve years from primary school to high school, you can learn a quick passage through your eyes. Only remember that the thoughts in the book are moistened with every dry corner of the soul.

It is universally true that all parents in the world love their children .However , as parents' views of life vary ,they show their love in different ways .Generally speaking ,parents can be classified into three types, the monarch type , the servant type, and the friend type according to their different ways of showing their love for their children .

The monarch type of parents are intolerant , antocratic, and selfcentered .They lay down regulations in the family for their children to observe .Furthermore, they insist that their children should act upon them without question . When their authority is challenged ,they become infuriated. With a firm belief in their own philosophy of life ,they hvave litter respect for others' opinions, least of all, their children's. The sentence they say most frequently to their children is, "You should do this."

Contrary to the monarch-type parents, the servant-type parents revolve around their children all the time . they are soft ,good-nature ,and easy-going. They never deny their children any wish ,and cheerful run to buy anything their children ask for .They are happy so long as their children are content .With the sincere belief that love means sacrifice, they are ready to give up anything for their children's sake .With their children at the center of their lives , they always ask" what else can we do for you?"

The friends-type parents ,as the term implies, treat their children as friends .They are generous and wise.Like good friends ,they disscuss with their children the lastest news, share their children's interests, and listen attentively to their children's expression of emotion ,whether it is anger ,fear ,joy or sorrow. They have an intimate relationship with their children while adhering to their prinicipled stand. They discuss problems with their children rather than provide ready solutions. They respect their children as their equals. They often say ,"Let's put our heads toghter and see wihat we can do"

There is no doubt that children welcome the third type of parents, for a free, friendly ,and sympathetic atomosphere at home is most favorable to the development of youngsters both in body and in mind .All parents should re-examine and change some of their ways of showing their love if they want their children to grow up happily and healthily.

To be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use starting late in life to say: “I will take an interest in this or that.” Such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief.

It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, human beings may be divided into three classes: those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death. It is no use offering the manual labourer, tired out with a hard week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend.

It may also be said that rational, industrious useful human beings are divided into two classes: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. Of these the former are the majority. They have their compensations.

The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. But Fortune’s favoured children belong to the second class. Their life is a natural harmony.

For them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays when they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vocation. Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, of a diversion of effort, is essential. Indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasure are those who most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their minds.

  Still Growing

Sir Edmund Hillary is famous for being the first person to climb Mt. Everest.

What many people do not know is that Sir Hillary did not make it to the top of Everest the first time he tried The first attempt was a complete failure. His c1imbing party encountered one problem after another and more than half his climbing party died.

Nonetheless, the British Parliament decided to honor him with some type of award. When he entered the chamber to receive his award, Sir Hillary saw that a large picture of Everest had been set up.

During the standing ovation that he was receiving, he walked over to the picture, shook his fist at it and said, "You won, this time. But you are as big as you are ever going to get. And I'm still growing."

We frequently hear the stories of people who have succeeded. And we frequently assume that they succeeded the first time.

But in fact it's the exact opposite.

The road to success is paved with the bricks of failure.

Passing through the Atlanta airport one morning, I caught one of those trains that take travelers from the main terminal to their boarding gates. Free, sterile and impersonal, the trains run back and forth all day long. Not many people consider them fun, but on this Saturday I heard laughter.

At the front of the first car – looking out the window at the track that lay ahead – were a man and his son.

We had just stopped to let off passengers, and the doors wee closing again. “Here we go! Hold on to me tight!” the father said. The boy, about five years old, made sounds of sheer delight.

I know we’re supposed to avoid making racial distinctions these days, so I hope no one will mind if I mention that most people on the train were white, dressed for business trips or vacations – and that the father and son were black, dressed in clothes that were just about as inexpensive as you can buy.

“Look out there!” the father said to his son. “See that pilot? I bet he’s walking to his plane.” The son craned his neck to look.

As I got off, I remembered some thing I’d wanted to buy in the terminal. I was early for my flight, so I decided to go back.

I did – and just as I was about to reboard the train for my gate, I saw that the man and his son had returned too. I realized then that they hadn’t been heading for a flight, but had just been riding the shuttle.

“I want to ride some more!”

“More?” the father said, mock-exasperated but clearly pleased. “You’re not tired?”

“This is fun!” his son said.

“All right,” the father replied, and when a door opened we all got on.

There are parents who can afford to send their children to Europe or Disneyland, and the children turn out rotten. There are parents who live in million-dollar houses and give their children cars and swimming pools, yet something goes wrong. Rich and poor, black and white, so much goes wrong so often.

“Where are all these people going, Daddy?” the son asked.

“All over the world,” came the reply. The other people in the air port wee leaving for distant destinations or arriving at the ends of their journeys. The father and son, though, were just riding this shuttle together, making it exciting, sharing each other’s company.

So many troubles in this country – crime, the murderous soullessness that seems to be taking over the lives of many young people, the lowering of educational standards, the increase in vile obscenities in public, the disappearance of simple civility. So many questions about what to do. Here was a father who cared about spending the day with his son and who had come up with this plan on a Saturday morning.

The answer is so simple: parents who care enough to spend time, and to pay attention and to try their best. It doesn’t cost a cent, yet it is the most valuable thing in the world.

The train picked up speed, and the father pointed something out, and the boy laughed again.

It is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels. This is exciting.Yet, on the other hand, competition breeze a pragmatic attitude.People choose to learn things that are useful, and do things that are profitable.Todays' college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism. Many college students choose business nor computing programming as their majors convinced that this professions are where the big money is.

It is not unusual to see the college students taking a part time jobs as a warming up for the real battle.I often see my friends taking GRE tests, working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving licence to get a licence. Well, I have nothing against being practical. As the competition in the job market gets more and more intense, students do have reasons to be practical.

However, we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training. Just imagine, if your utilitarianism is prevails on campus, living no space for the cultivation of students' minds,or nurturing of their soul. We will see university is training out well trained spiritless working machines.

If utilitarianism prevails society, we will see people bond by mind-forged medicals lost in the money-making ventures;we will see humality lossing their grace and dignity, and that would be disastrous.I'd like to think society as a courage and people persumed for profit or fame as a horese that pulls the courage.

Yet without the driver picking direction the courage would go straight and may even end out in a precarious situation .A certificate may give you some advantage, but broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrities ,these are assets you cannot acquire through any quick fixed way.In today's world, whether highest level of competition is not of skills or expertise , but vision and strategy. Your intellectual quality largely determinds how far you can go in your career.

Chinese Undergraduates in the US

Each year, elite American universities and liberal arts colleges, such as Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Amherst and Wellesley, offer a number of scholarships to Chinese high school graduates to study in their undergraduate programs. Four years ago, I received such a scholarship from Yale.

What are these Chinese undergrads like? Most come from middle-class families in the big urban centers of China. The geographical distribution is highly skewed, with Shanghai and Beijing heavily over-represented. Outside the main pool, a number of Yale students come from Changsha and Ningbo, swhereseach year American Yale graduates are sent to teach English.

The overwhelming majority of Chinese undergraduates in the US major in science, engineering or economics. Many were academic superstars in their high schools - gold medallists in international academic Olympiads or prize winners in national academic contests. Once on US campuses, many of them decide to make research a lifelong commitment.

Life outside the classroom constitutes an important part of college life. At American universities the average student spends less than thirteen hours a week in class. Many Chinese students use their spare time to pick up some extra pocket money. At Yale, one of the most common campus jobs is washing dishes in the dining halls. Virtually all Chinese undergraduates at Yale work part-time in the dining halls at some point in their college years. As they grow in age and sophistication, they upgrade to better-paying and less stressful positions.

The more popular and interesting jobs include working as a computer assistant, math homework grader, investment office assistant and lab or research assistant. The latter three often lead to stimulating summer jobs.

Student activities are another prominent feature of American college life. Each week there are countless student-organized events of all sorts - athletic, artistic, cultural, political or social (i.e. just for fun). New student organizations are constantly being created, and Chinese undergrads contribute to this ferment. Sport looms much larger on US campuses than in China. At Yale, intramural sports from soccer to water polo take place all year long; hence athletic talent is a real social asset.

One of the Chinese students at Yale several years ago was a versatile sportsman. His athletic talents and enthusiastic participation in sporting events, combined with his other fine qualities, made him a popular figure in his residential college.
