　　近代圣誕樹起源于德國。德國人于每年12月24日，即亞當和夏娃節(jié)，在家里布置一株樅樹(伊甸園之樹)，將薄餅乾掛在上面，象徵圣餅(基督徒贖罪的標記)。近代改用各式小甜餅代替圣餅，還常加上象徵基督的蠟燭。此外，室內(nèi)還設(shè)有圣誕塔，是一木質(zhì)的三角形結(jié)構(gòu)，上有許多小架格放置基督雕像，塔身飾以常青樹枝葉、蠟燭和一顆星。到16世紀，圣誕塔和伊甸園樹合并為圣誕樹。

　　18世紀，這種風俗在德國信義宗信徒中頗流行，但直至19世紀才流行全國，成為德國根深柢固的傳統(tǒng)。19世紀初，圣誕樹傳到英國;19世紀中葉維多利亞女王的丈夫、德國皇子艾伯特加以推廣普及。維多利亞式圣誕樹飾以蠟燭、糖果和花色糕點，用絲帶和紙鏈吊掛在樹枝上。早在17世紀圣誕樹即由德國移民帶到北美，至19世紀廣為流行。在奧地利、瑞士、波蘭和荷蘭也頗流行。在中國和日本，圣誕樹于19及20世紀由美國傳教士傳入，多飾以彩色繽紛的紙花。

　　在西方國家里，圣誕節(jié)也是一個家庭團聚和喜慶的節(jié)日，通常會在家里陳設(shè)一棵圣誕樹。在西方，不論是否基督徒，過圣誕節(jié)時都要準備一棵圣誕樹，以增加節(jié)日的'歡樂氣氛。圣誕樹一般是用杉柏之類的常綠樹做成，象征生命長存。樹上裝飾著各種燈燭、彩花、玩具、星星，掛上各種圣誕禮物。圣誕之夜，人們圍著圣誕樹唱歌跳舞，盡情歡樂。
