最常使用的英文文件字體:Times New Roman
電腦字型早已大眾化。不必特別購買,每臺電腦都有好多字型,足夠提供一般用途使用,例如製作簡單的個(gè)人履歷、投影片或報(bào)告等。但是,字型背后的知識卻沒有如此普及。大眾字型學(xué)(popular typography)系列文章,就是要為每個(gè)用字的人介紹使用字型的基本知識。
首先,我們從英文開始。最主要的原因是每臺電腦都有許多英文系統(tǒng)字型,可以說是人人唾手可得,因此也成為練習(xí)排版的基本素材。另一個(gè)原因是,字型學(xué)理論目前以歐文文字較為完整。也因此,就先從英文開始展示字型學(xué)基本知識。
在第一篇文章中,我們先談?wù)動⑽穆臍v表(或者,英文報(bào)告、英文簡報(bào))要用哪套字型比較好?

先從簡單的答案說起吧。用于內(nèi)文,電腦里除了 Times New Roman 以外, 可能還有 Adobe Garamond(或其他Garamond), Adobe Caslon(或其他Caslon), Baskerville, Centaur, Lucida Bright, Palatino, Goudy, Hoefler text, Lucida Sans, Gill Sans, Franklin Gothic 等名牌、高品質(zhì)英文字體,無襯線與襯線字不一而足。
使用hoefler text,美國紐約知名字體設(shè)計(jì)公司H&FJ出品。
使用Palatino,有古典質(zhì)感筆劃與現(xiàn)代樣式(modern style)骨架的字體。
使用Garamond,閱讀性能極高的舊風(fēng)格(Old style)字體。
OK,簡單的部份講完了,這些就是大部分電腦裡都內(nèi)建的高品質(zhì)系統(tǒng)英文字體,其實(shí)滿好看的履歷表字型(需要快速答案的朋友可以先離開了XD)。
但要是字型學(xué)只是一門選字的學(xué)問那該有多好!選字就已經(jīng)夠煩惱了,但字型學(xué)要處理的議題還更多。
復(fù)雜的答案
選對履歷表字型來說有這麼重要嗎?
有個(gè)在金融投銀圈的學(xué)妹談到,投給外商銀行的履歷表,使用 Times New Roman 就對了。這是一個(gè)相當(dāng)有趣的觀察。誠然,許多國際學(xué)術(shù)研討會官方指定用字型也是這套字型?赡苁且?yàn)?Times New Roman 非常普及,不分品牌,幾乎每臺電腦裡都會內(nèi)建,所以不會造成會議手冊編輯人員的困擾;另一方面是因?yàn)?Times New Roman 的外表符合需要。
Times New Roman 誕生于 1930 年,是當(dāng)時(shí)英國泰晤士報(bào)採用的「新」字體,F(xiàn)在電腦中使用的 Times New Roman可能是由微軟自行生產(chǎn)或 Linotype 公司為麥金塔系統(tǒng)復(fù)刻的版本。這款字體是追溯羅馬時(shí)期最早的字母型態(tài)設(shè)計(jì)的,代表某種西方文化的正統(tǒng)美感與價(jià)值。
這個(gè)字體具有手寫感的重心線(axis)。所謂重心線就像下面圖示。人的書寫與閱讀重力方向都是從左上到右下,符合這種重心設(shè)計(jì)的字一般來說都有人文特徵 (humanist),手寫產(chǎn)生的自然線條與重心會導(dǎo)引視線穿梭于字裡行間,使閱讀較為舒適。
Times New Roman 的重心線(axis):從左上到右下,符合閱讀時(shí)的「視覺重力方向」;在造型上也有巴洛克與新古典主義字體的風(fēng)格痕跡。
但是 Times New Roman 卻沒有手寫的質(zhì)樸與個(gè)性變化。它的線條是筆直、理性而可預(yù)測的;字體的粗細(xì)比例設(shè)計(jì)也回溯巴洛克時(shí)代的莊重,而在筆劃收尾這種影響字體風(fēng)格甚重的地方,卻又融匯 18 世紀(jì)新古典主義的精致尖端。
從這個(gè)字體的歷史來看,它原本是設(shè)計(jì)給報(bào)紙內(nèi)文使用,所以要兼顧長時(shí)間閱讀的舒適性,所以採用了具有手寫感的重心;而身為英國最權(quán)威的報(bào)紙,文字的風(fēng)格必須有英國的精致、莊重、典雅,要有時(shí)代感,又要中性、公正。Times New Roman 的視覺型態(tài)恰好符合這種聯(lián)想,也迎合了它的用途。
字型是版面最基本的元素,當(dāng)然重要;厮 Times New Roman 的.設(shè)計(jì),正好可以驗(yàn)證字型對于設(shè)計(jì)的影響。而學(xué)妹會呼吁大家在投銀履歷表上使用該字體也有其道理。除了好讀以外,或許金融圈的工作必須要理性、準(zhǔn)確、可預(yù)測而莊重,而這與 Times New Roman 有一定的視覺聯(lián)想吧。
選字:合宜的視覺聯(lián)想與機(jī)能
但是如果今天溝通的對象不是外商銀行,而是設(shè)計(jì)工作室呢?如果不是那麼極端的話,那也可能是管理顧問、廣告公司、新創(chuàng)科技公司……不一而足;這種時(shí)候要怎麼辦?或許還是用 Times New Roman 一招闖天下?
雖然 Times New Roman 有它的經(jīng)典性,但在歐美地區(qū) Times New Roman 已經(jīng)成為某種無趣的代表--莊重、典雅、中性的英國老伯伯,沒有個(gè)性。又或許是因?yàn)檫@套字型根本過于普及,若不考慮情境而隨意使用,會被認(rèn)為是「隨便挑了一套安全字體來用」,毫無設(shè)計(jì)感可言。
這種時(shí)候我們就返樸歸真,想想設(shè)計(jì)這份文件的目的到底是什麼。思考過程也沒有這麼玄,其實(shí)就是老生常談:思考要與誰溝通,與溝通的目的是什麼:是要表現(xiàn)自己是個(gè)什麼樣的人嗎?其實(shí)這也是履歷表要解決的問題之一:與對方說明自己是什麼樣的人。而字體的視覺聯(lián)想(感覺、個(gè)性)可以幫助自己說明這個(gè)問題。
