1. Educational philosophy
The Department of Philosophy aims to fully investigate the fundamental principles of human culture. In addition, through specialized research regarding the diverse developments of human culture, it aims to produce graduates who are capable of considering the roots of the various problems that we face in modern society. Students complete the master's and doctoral courses by completing the prescribed amount of credits and writing a thesis.

哲學系旨在全面考察人類文化的基礎原則。同時，通過對人類文化各種發(fā)展形式的專門研究，哲學系努力培養(yǎng)有能力思考當今社會人類面臨的各種問題的根源的學生。學生通過完成規(guī)定的學分和論文來完成碩士課程和博士課程。
2. Educational program
This department is divided up into the five specialties of Philosophy, Ethics, History of Indian Philosophy, History of Chinese Philosophy, and Art Studies. Students choose one of these specializations and conduct their research under the guidance of one advisor and several sub-advisors. Master's course students must earn a total of thirty or more credits, including two credits of thesis guidance, and also complete a master's thesis. Doctoral course students must earn four credits of thesis guidance and must finish their doctoral dissertation to complete the course.

This department is unique in its focus on researching the most fundamental human values of truth, goodness, and beauty. To this end, the ability to closely and accurately read and understand the classic works of the past is required.

4. Basic admissions policy
When selecting students for admission, our basic policy is to select potential scholars who are in tune with the educational philosophy of the department. For this purpose, we ask students to submit a research plan or thesis and ensure that they have the necessary expertise and language skill for a given specialty, including an oral examination.

1. Educational philosophy
The Department of History and Geography aims to cultivate people who can provide knowledge that is indispensable for international exchange and mutual understanding through specialized research regarding societies – an overall picture that includes economics, politics, and culture – that differ according to historical and geographical conditions. Students complete the master's and doctoral courses by completing the prescribed amount of credits and writing a thesis.

This department is divided into seven specialties: Japanese History, Asian History, Korean History, Archaeology, Western History, History of Islamic Civilization, and Geography. The master's course also includes the History Core Division Course, a cross-field educational curriculum. Students choose one of these specializations and conduct their research under the guidance of one advisor and several sub-advisors. Master's course students must earn a total of thirty or more credits, including two credits of thesis guidance, and also complete a master's thesis. Doctoral course students must earn four credits of thesis guidance and must finish their doctoral dissertation to complete the course. This department aims to thoroughly understand the origins of modern society through investigation into society's temporal and spatial diversity. Specifically, students must possess the ability to empirically and theoretically explain the characteristics of society in a specific area and region through gathering and analyzing historical materials. We hope that this process will cultivate the sense to recognize the diverse nature of the human spirit, logic, and the ability to think.

As Japan becomes progressively more internationalized, greater international exchange can also be seen in the Graduate School of Humanities, School of Letters. Vigorous exchange is taking place including overseas trips and training undertaken by teaching staff, visits by foreign researchers, student foreign exchange, and the acceptance of exchange students from other countries. In addition, foreign teaching staff members are carrying out education and research in the fields of English Linguistics and Literature , Chinese Literature, French Literature, and German Literature.
隨著日本國際化程度越來越高，九州大學研究生院的人文學院、文學院也見證了更加廣泛的國際交換。富有活力的交換正在發(fā)生，包括海外旅游和教職工培訓、外國研究員訪問、外國學生交換以及海外交換生錄取等。此外，海外教職工也從事英語語言學與文學、漢語文學、法語文學、德語文學方面的教學和研究。
Based on such international exchange, the number of schools with which we have academic and student exchange agreements is growing each year. As of February 2007, they include 110 institutions in twenty-two countries and regions.

University departments that have academic exchange agreements with the School of Letters include Jinan University’s Department of Literature (China) and the University of Cambridge’s Department of East Asian Studies (United Kingdom). University departments that have academic exchange agreements with the Graduate School of Humanities, School of Letters include East China Normal University’s Department of History (China) and Shandong University’s Oriental Archaeology Research Center (China).

In addition, the History Core Division Course of the Graduate School of Humanities deepens academic exchange between teaching staff and students through the Consortium for the Study of East Asian History. This Consortium is made up of Peking University, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Shandong University, East China Normal University, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences History Research Center in China; Pusan National University, Chonbuk National University, Dong-A University and the Academy of Korean Studies Northeast Institute of Ancient History in Korea; and the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures in the United Kingdom.
此外，人文學院歷史核心課程通過東亞歷史研究聯(lián)盟，加深了教職工和學生之間的學術交換。該聯(lián)盟包括北京大學、南京大學、復旦大學、山東大學、華東師范大學、中國社會科學院歷史研究中心;釜山國立大學、全北國立大學、東亞大學、韓國古代史東北研究所、英國塞恩思伯里日本藝術與文化研究所。
Active international exchange is also taking place in each department.Considering the role that Japan plays in the world, and the geographic and historical environment that Kyushu University provides in Asia, future international exchange will surely grow even livelier with countries all over the world including neighboring Asian countries as well as countries in Europe and the Americas.
