To other Europeans, the best known quality of the British, and in particular of the English, is "reserved".
A reserved person is one who does not talk very much to strangers, does not show much emotion, and seldom gets excited.
It is difficult to get to know a reserved person: he never tells you anything about himself,
and you may work with him for years without ever knowing where he lives, how many children he has, and what his interests are.
English people tend to be like that.
Closely related to English reserve is English modesty.
Within their hearts, the English are perhaps no less conceited than anybody else, but in their relations with others they value at least a show of modesty.
Self-praise is felt to be impolite. If a person is, let us say, very good at tennis and someone asks him if he is a good player,
he will seldom reply "Yes", because people will think him conceited.
He will probably give an answer like, "Im not bad, or " I think Im very good, or "Well, Im very keen on tennis."
"Even if he had managed to reach the finals in last years local championships, he would say it in such a way as to suggest that it was only due to a piece of good luck.
Since reserve and modesty are part of his own nature, the typical English tends to expect them in others.
He secretly looks down on more excitable nations, and likes to think of himself as more reliable than they are.
He doesnt trust big promises and open shows of feelings, especially if they are expressed in flowery language.
He doesnt trust self-praise of any kind.
This applies not only to what other people may tell him about themselves orally, but to the letters they may write to him.
To those who are fond of flowery expressions, the Englishman may appear uncomfortably cold.

When we were young, we had dreams and expectations. We imagine things; we keep thinking about what we want to be, what we want to do, what makes us proud and happy and what will we become.
We grew up, and things seemed like having their own way. We accept our success or failures and we move on. The rapid change, the need to do the urgent things, the works, the pressures and the failures, all kill part of our visions.
Things have changed, but they cannot really take away the dreams. We still have to dream on, to visualize our desires, our wants, our vision of our future, even when we are considered too old for such things.
Cornell Sanders started his business when he was sixty, and started the whole successful KFC business. The main thing is not the age whether being too old, or too young, but it is the desire to dream on, and the courage to realize it.
The ability to dream on is one of the fine qualities of human race that other species do not possess. So dream on, and put a deadline: make it a giant dream, a tiny one, an old everlasting one, a new-found one, a hobby-related one, a change of life one, a religious one, a stupid one, a stroke of genius one, or just whatever... just continue to dream on... Then, Just Go and Do It!

Prometheus was a Titan .In the war between Zeus the giants he had stood on the side of the new Olympian gods.Out of the clay he made the first man,to whom Athena gave soul and holy breath.Prometheus spent a lot of time and energy in creating the gift of fire. The fire raised man above all animals .Later, there held a joint meeting of gods and men.The meeting was to decide what part of burnt animals should be given to gods and what to men.Prometheus cut up an ox and divided it into two parts:under the skin he placed the fresh, and under the fat he put the bones, for he knew the selfish Zeus loved fat.
Zeus saw through the trick and felt displeased at the Prometheus favor towards men.So in a masterful way he took away the gift of fire from mankind. However,Prometheus managed to steal fire from heaven and secretly brought it down to men.Flying into an anger at this unjustified act of rebellion,Zeus let the other gods chain Prometheus to a rock on Mountain Caucasus, where a hungry eagle ever tore at his liver which ever grew again. His period of pain was to be thirty-thousand years.Prometheus faced his bitter fate firmly and never lost courage before Zeus.At last Heracles made Prometheus and Zeus restore to friend ship, when Heracles came over in search of the golden apple and killed the eagle and set the friend of mankind free.
Whether you are thinking about your personality or your life in general, success means focusing on the here-and-now. While it is important to acknowledge the choices and experiences which resulted in you being where you are today, it is equally important to not allow yourself to become so caught up in thoughts of the past that the present day passes you by.
Self-motivation is the key to ensuring that you do not continue repeating the same mistakes. You may have had one or more errors in judgment which led you to take the wrong path, or to make mistakes that were not in your best interest. You can acknowledge this without rehashing them over and over again in your mind, and simply be determined to make different, better decisions today.

In my eye, my father is so adorable, because he can give me advices and help me to make the best decision. My father experienced a lot. When he graduated from college, his first job was to work in the office, then he found life was boring to sit in the office all the day, so he decided to quit and then started his trip to many places. My father had been traveled to many places, he opened his vision and then went back home to find another job he liked.
When he met my mother, he thought it was time to settle down. I was so interested in his life experience, I couldn’t help thinking what if I go with him. I must will meet many new persons and then see the beautiful scenery. I want to live as my father, when the time comes, I will travel too.

When youre going through the workday, try to keep similar tasks together. When you switch from one thing to another, your brain takes a few minutes to catch up and settle in: constantly jumping between answering emails and writing a report and tidying up your desk just means youll lose track of where youd got to. You might feel like youre working super-efficiently (because your mind is buzzing all over the place), but youll actually be wasting a lot of time.
If you need to answer a number of emails, do them all at once. The same goes for phone calls, filing, photocopying and other similar tasks.

One morning a man was crossing a narrow bridge when he saw a fisherman on the shady bank of the deep, smooth river under him,so he stopped to watch him quietly.
After a few minutes, the fisherman pulled his line in.There was a big,fat fish at the end of it.
The fisherman took it off the hook and threw it back into the water.
Then he put his hook and line in again. After a few more minutes he caught another big fish.Again he threw it back into the river. Then, the third time,he caught a small fish.He put it into his basket and started to get ready to go.The man on the bridge was very surprised,so he spoke to the fisherman. He said,"Why did you throw those beautiful, big fish back into the water, and keep only that small one?"
The fisherman looked up and answered,"Small fryingpan."

I am in the family of the growth composition 600 words _ junior high school composition _ inspirational composition.
Flowers, growing in the soil; Fish grow in water. I thrive in kinship.
Hard love
"These English words must be remembered today, or else not!" My father was ordering me again, and he always did, in the tone of command, to do something. My father was strict with me because he wanted me to be a serious man. I understand him, but I sometimes grumble. At that moment, he would stare me hard, and the harsh eyes always shook me again and again, and I had to continue my study.
My fathers strict requirements made my academic performance advance by leaps and bounds. Every time I get good grades, I always think of my fathers sternness, the strict family ties.

We often close ourselves off when traumatic events happen in our lives; instead of letting the world soften us, we let it drive us deeper into ourselves. We try to deflect the hurt and pain by pretending it doesn’t exist, but although we can try this all we want, in the end, we can’t hide from ourselves. We need to learn to open our hearts to the potentials of life and let the world soften us.
Whenever we start to let our fears and seriousness get the best of us, we should take a step back and re-evaluate our behavior. The items listed below are six ways you can open your heart more fully and completely.

Whenever a painful situation arises in your life, try to embrace it instead of running away or trying to mask the hurt. When the sadness strikes, take a deep breath and lean into it. When we run away from sadness that’s unfolding in our lives, it gets stronger and more real. We take an emotion that’s fleeting and make it a solid event, instead of something that passes through us.

I have a good friend, her name is Lily. We met each other since we were five years old. At that time, I moved next to her house, because of my father’s work. I was shy at first, but then I was affected by her kindness. We became good friends soon. When I meet difficulties, she will help me without hesitation.
I am so thankful to her, I am so lucky to have her as my friend. Our friendship is precious.

The good books of the hour, then, --I do not speak of the bad ones—is simply the useful or pleasant talk of some person whom you cannot otherwise converse with, printed for you. Very useful often, telling you what you need to know; very pleasant often, as a sensible friends present talk would be. These bright accounts of travels; good-humoured and witty discussion of . .
questions; lively or pathetic story-telling in the form of novel; firm fact-telling, by the real agents concerned in the events of passing history; --all these books of the hour, multiplying among us as education becomes more general, are a peculiar characteristic and possession of the present age: we ought to be entirely thankful for them, and entirely ashamed of ourselves if we make no good use of them. But we make the worse possible use, if we allow them to usurp the place of true books: for, strictly speaking, they are not books at all, but merely letters or newspapers in good print. Our friends letter may be delightful, or necessary, today: whether worth keeping or not, is to be considered. (189 words)
The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith.
The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come from encounter with the roughness of the world. He will guard the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains.
When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journeys through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the grave will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

Venice is a fascinating city between sea and sky. It is built on 117 islands. There arent any cars or buses because there are no highways in Venice. But it has 150 canals and 400 bridges. The narrow streets, with theirhistoric names, are paved with flagstones, but have no footpaths. They are lined with flower-decked balconies, Madonnas, shop signs and lanterns. Artisans stalls and palaces stand side by side. The squares are charming. The brick bridges, with white stone trimmings, are pitched high to allow barges to pass under them. Every year thousands of touristsfromthe five continents visit this beautiful city.
They are always amazed at the charm of her water and pellucid light, which can make them freefromall dust and cooled by the sea breezes. But because the level of the surrounding waters is constantly rising, the exceptional position of Venice constitutes a threat to its very existence. And the Venetians love their city and want to stay there to save Venicefromthe sea. Now carious measures have already been taken and a plan to safeguard and remedy the position is under investigation.

Recently, some of my classmates are confused and disappointed because they found that their gain is not equal to their pain. Concerning this problem, what I can say is, “just try your best”.
Life is not fair. We always say that, “no pain, no gain”, but we have to know another one—the gain is not always equal to the pain. Therefore, if you want to gain something, just try your best to do it, and do not count what you have pain. If you always count the time and the effort you spend in it, you will unconsciously have some expect in your mind. Once you find that your gain does not reach your expect, your confusion and disappointment will come into being.
Of course, most of us would feel confused and disappointed when we meet with difficulty or setback, but it should not keep for a long time. Our life is limited, and we need to seize the chance to restart after experiencing setback instead of indulge ourselves in negative moods and abandon ourselves so that we still have chances to achieve our goals and be successful.
Therefore, just try your best. Try you best to do everything you value, and you will gain what you want some days and without any regret.

Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward other’s stare with you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to stare at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to avert his gaze, his intentions are obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking, to tell him that he is attentive.
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate you, you will feel disconcerted. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. Quite the contrary.
In fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words cannot express.
Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.

Yiyang distance to go now for a month, even if it still can not find their own satisfaction that four days to record your feelings accompanied me time, perhaps rough speech, because of you, in my mind it is the most beautiful story. I said give all of you the next chapter.
Understanding your first 41 days, I swore off all sensible idea, put on a single word to make my sincere letter, the selection of a gift wrapped my deep tenderness, embarked on a train destined for Yiyang , duty-bound in love for the first time chose to be wearing armor of the brave. You probably never know, paranoid view of love in my modesty and pride, but I met you, we are all collapse if there is another new self. Always wanted to be a special woman, always want to have an extraordinary experience and love the plot, but be careful when produce throbbing, suddenly found the most simple moving enough soul-stirring.
April, always rainy season. Newcomers unfamiliar to us can only wander aimlessly hanging around in the streets, most of the time to be bored to walk, no fame, no snacks, and even the so-called downtowwn street far "beyond" my expectations, really tired then find a place to eat some random point to sit down and rest, we even went to Internet cafes, you play the game, I go to bed. Unusually dull, there is fatigue, they will complain, but our mutual interlocking fingers, I am also deeply satisfied. Accompany and help you pick the color of clothes, shoes and styles for your reference, to discuss the location of accommodation, hazy rain you as I hold the umbrella, when I put a chill swept coat, placid warm my heart to heal the remnants of the city disappointed.
Holidays fleeting, eventually usher respectively, without the slightest sadness, we have each quiet smile and said goodbye sentence, I went straight to the abnormal strong, suddenly walked into the wicket, to be suddenly turned your face already It is blocked out of my sight. Miss an instant flood burst!
I have many times in the past I would look forward to the future to meet the kind of person, what kind of story happens, you deviate from my original all fantasy, but no regrets. True love can not extricate themselves in love probably is a great contrast with their mate choice criteria person! After a number means the situation around long before the achievements of this contented encounter, how lucky, finally, are you!

One spring I went a walking tour in the country. It was a glorious spring. Not the sort of spring they give us in these miserable times, under this shameless government -a mixture of east wind, blizzard, snow, rain, fog, frost, hail, sleet and thunder-storms, but a sunny, blue-skyed, joyous spring, such as we used to have regularly every year when I was a young man, and things were different.
It was an exceptionally beautiful spring, even for those golden days; and as I wandered through the waking land, and saw the dawning of the coming green, and watched the blush upon the hawthorn hedge, deepening each day beneath the kisses of the sun, and looked up at the proud old mother trees, dandling their numerous baby buds upon their strong fond arms holding them high for the soft west wind to caress as he passed laughing by, and marked the primrose yellow creep across the carpet of the woods, and saw the new flush of the field and saw the new light on the hills, and heard the new-found gladness of the birds, and heard from wood and farm and meadow the timid callings of the little new-born things, wondering to find themselves alive, and smelt the freshness of the earth, and felt the promise in the air, and felt a strong hand in the wind, my spirit rose within me.
Spring had come to me also, and stirred me with a strange new life, with a strange new hope. I, too, was part of nature, and it was spring! Tender leaves and blossoms were unfolding from my heart. Bright flowers of love and gratitude were opening round its roots. I felt new strength in all my limbs. New blood was running through my veins. Nobler thoughts and nobler longings were throbbing through my brain. As I walked, nature came and talked beside me, and showed me the world and myself, and the ways of God seemed clearer.

A young man asked Socrates the secret of Success. Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning.
They met. Socrates asked the young man to walk with him towards the river.
When the water got up to their necks, Socrates took the young man by surprise and ducked him into the water.
The man struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him there until he started turning blue. The young man struggled hard and finally managed to get out and the first thing he did was to gasp and take deep breath.
Socrates asked, “What you wanted the most when you were there?” The man replied, “Air.”
Socrates said, “that’s the most secret to success. When you want success as badly as you wanted air, you will get it. There is no other secret.”

Sports and games do a lot of good to our health. They can make us strong, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep healthy and fit. Especially they can be of great value to people who work with their brains most of the day, for sports and games give people valuable practice in exercising the body.
What’s more, they make our life richer and more colorful. If we do not have a strong body, we will find it hard to do whatever we want. So persons of all ages enjoy watching and taking part in various kinds of sports-track and fields, swimming, skating, football, volleyball and basketball, etc.
Sports and games are also very useful in character training. They demand not only physical skills and strength but also courage, endurance, discipline and usually teamwork. For boys and girls, what is learned in the playground often has a deep effect on their character. If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will later find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.
A healthy citizen makes a strong country. Let’s all take part in sports and games.

Men who are accused of never listening by women now have an excuse -- women"s voices are more difficult for men to listen to than other men"s, a report said.
The Daily Mail, quoting findings published in the specialist magazine NeuroImage, said researchers at Sheffield university in northern England discovered startling differences in the way the brain responds to male and female sounds.
Men deciphered female voices using the auditory part of the brain that processes music, while male voices engaged a simpler mechanism, it said.
The Mail quoted researcher Michael Hunter as saying, "The female voice is actually more complex than the male voice, due to differences in the size and shape of the vocal cords and larynx between men and women, and also due to women having greater natural "melody" in their voices.
"This causes a more complex range of sound frequencies than in a male voice."
The findings may help explain why people suffering hallucinations usually hear male voices, the report added, as the brain may find it much harder to conjure up a false female voice accurately than a false male voice.

A son and his father are walking in the mountains. Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams, “AAAhhhhhh!”
To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain, “AAAhhhhhh!”
Curious, he yells, “Who are you?”he receives the answer, “Who are you?” Angered at the response, he screams, “Coward!”and he receives the answer, “Coward!”
He looks to his father and asks, “What’s going on?” The father smiles and says, “My son, pay attention.” And he then screams to the mountain, “I admire you!” The voice answers, “I admire you!” Again the man screams, “You are a champion!” The voice answers, “You are a champion!”
The boy is amazed, but does not understand. Then the father explains, “People call this ECHO, but really this is LIFE. It gives youback everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions.”
If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything,in all aspects of life. Life will give you back everything you have given to it. Your life is not a coincidence. It is a reflection of you.

The critical element to physical vitality is ensuring that you have an abundant level of nerve energy. How do you do this? Realize that day-to-day you’re expending nerve energy through your actions, and as obvious as it sounds, you do need to make sure that you rest and recharge. By the way, how much sleep are you getting? If you’re regularly logging eight to ten hours of sack time, you’re probably getting too much sleep! Six to seven hours has been found to be optimum for most people. Contrary to popular belief, sitting still doesn’t preserve energy. The truth is, that’s usually when you feel most tired. The human nervous system needs to move to have energy.
To a certain extent, expending energy gives you a greater sense of energy. As you move, oxygen flows through your system, and that physical level of health creates the emotional sense of vitality that can help you to deal with virtually any negative challenge you could have in your life. So realize that a sense of vitality is a critical emotion to cultivate in order to handle virtual any emotions that come up in your life, not to mention the critical resource in experiencing consistent passion.

supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young.
When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.

"We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite---"
I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just like a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past. I dont want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the reminder of our lives.
The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will effect it. Each day will brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our businesses, if we will only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.

Rota is a very small town in Spain. It is famous for its fruits and vegetables. In particular, it is famous for its tomatoes and pumpkins.
One would think that the soil of this region must be very good. It must be very rich in order to grow such excellent tomatoes and pumpkins. But the soil is not good. It is poor. It is only sand and rock — nothing more. The winds of the ocean blow hard. They have carried away the good soil. They have left only sand in its place. There is also little water. The soil is dry and hard.
The farmers of this region have to work very hard. They work from morning till night. They dig wells wherever there is water. They carry water by hand to their gardens. They use anything and everything to make the soil a little richer around each plant. They cover the young plants with leaves. In this way they protect them from the sun and wind. They watch each plant carefully. They watch the plants which are not strong. They give these plants more water and more attention. They show the plants the same affection they show for their wives or children.
There is a proverb about Rota farmers: the farmer of Rota touches each tomato plant at least forty times a day.

It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist.
Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral part of ones entire life.
Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.
